what you can do

GET INVOLVED LOCALLY

Our movement is as much grassroots as it is national.  It’s vital that we connect with advocacy groups, survivors, and policy makers on the local level so that we can enact change from the ground up.  Ways to connect and share your voice:

EDUCATE YOURSELF

Get to know the ins and outs of the fight to ban solitary confinement through research and learning.  Visit the websites of our partners to learn about the various facets of the issue and the challenges we face in passing legislation.

ADVANCE THE CONVERSATION

Let’s give them something to talk about!  Starting the national conversation about the abuses of solitary confinement is a core part of our mission.  It takes the will of the people to enact meaningful change.  You can do your part by encouraging civil conversation around the topic.

SUPPORT LEGISLATION

Passing legislation that brings the United States into compliance with the Mandela Rules is the ultimate goal.  The work begins and ends with the law, so advocating for and supporting legislation is crucial.  But everyone can help, not just policy makers and attorneys.

JOIN THE MOVEMENT

A SOLITARY MISSION

We will end long-term solitary confinement in the United States within the next 10 years.

Working tirelessly with anti-solitary groups across the nation, we provide funding, research, and other resources to effect meaningful policy change around solitary confinement and educate the general public on harmful impacts of using solitary confinement as punishment on individuals, communities, and even our economy.

VISION

We envision a nation that affords all of its citizens basic human rights and a criminal justice system that can provide punishment and rehabilitation without torture.

Strategy

Unlock The Box supports anti-solitary organizations across the country with funding, resources, and technical assistance to impact meaningful policy change.

Community

We are a community-first campaign that empowers survivors, their families, and  local advocacy groups to create meaningful impact on policy surrounding solitary.
